I was shy I mainly just hung out with my dad and my grandpa and uncles by our tents, sitting quietly and listening, looking around at all of the land and people. When I was fifteen I went to my tribe's -the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska- powwow for the second time. So as I prepare to have a Kontomblé ceremony today in a wee village, I honor my long time teacher, Malidoma Somé, who remembered me before I was able to remember myself.” With a heart of gratitude, I didn’t know that my work with this village of Kontomblé, who are essentially family, would have me traveling on their assignment to remind others of these incredible beings who have historically/herstorically worked with humans to care for the earth. The little people live all over the earth. The Kontomblé that are with me are of the mountains. Now though, I thankfully know in my own heart and remember that I have been connecting with them since I was a little girl raised in the mountains of Georgia. It has happened in New Zealand and in Mongolia. Here in Bali when I sit with the old seers that see well, I’ve been reminded of the same. about this village of Kontomblé that lives with me. It didn’t matter which ancient village I went to, I would be told the same thing. Just keep coming back is what they told me. I would oftentimes cry when I sat with these diviners in ancient villages because my soul knew what they were saying was true. She looked at Malidoma and asked how this American woman was connected like this without ever having been to Africa. During my first journey to Burkina, it seemed to deeply confuse the Kontomblé diviner that I formally began my work with. Many initiations in Burkina helped to decondition my mind sufficiently so as to begin to remember for myself. It took me a while to remember that on my own.

Through sitting with Malidoma in divination, the pieces about how relevant my work with the Kontomblé was/is for this lifetime started coming together. And thank goodness I trusted my intuition, no matter how unconventional it seemed at the time. That was crystal clear when I met him in this life 15 years ago. I knew Malidoma before I incarnated in this lifetime. It has led me down some of the most dusty trails, trails that lead directly into ancient Baobob trees, so to speak. “My journey with the Kontomblé has been anything but straight forward.
